"Here We Are Now, Entertain Us"

This is a guest post from Monica Boughdady - a 20 year old medical student in London, England.  In this post, Monica articulates a very mature and "wise beyond her years" attitude towards the society we live in with regards to our need for constant entertainment.  You won't find too many twenty-year olds who say the things she says.  WAY TO GO MONICA! You can follow Monica on her blog, The Prodigal Daughter, and also on twitter, @MonicaBoughdady.  And if you too are interested in guest posting on my blog, please visit my Guest Post guidelines for more info.

"Here we are now, entertain us."

That’s a line from a hit song by one of the earliest “grunge bands” of the 1990s – Nirvana, led by Kurt Cobain.  That one line is a good summary of our culture today.  We are obsessed with being entertained.

Tell me, what is the focus of our entertainment?  Is it anything more than just an expression of our selfishness? Let’s be honest – our entertainment has nothing to do with producing something useful or of benefit to others.  The goal is to consume something for the sake of pleasure.  Our lives are like being in a theme park, just looking for the next adrenaline rush to make us feel alive.

As a student, I have found that even our friendships are centered around who is the most entertaining.  Don’t get me wrong – being funny and having a sense of humor is a gift from God and not something to apologize for.  God loves funny and He loves fun, but not if it comes at a price.

How’s the old saying go?  “He who makes you laugh, laughs at you.  But he who makes you cry, cries with you.”

Filling up each day with meaningless activities may give pleasure to the body, but it will also starve the spirit within us. We, being made in the image of God (Trinity) have three components to our being: mind, body and spirit.  All three are neatly interwoven and strongly linked.

Each day takes a toll on you physically, mentally, emotionally, and spiritually.  Which do you seek to replenish?  Which is most important to you?  Many of us seek physical rest but to the neglect of the others.

But the Bible says that God holds it all in the palm of His Hand.  Psalm 23 says “You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.”  God has much replenishing to give and He’s ready to pour it over us and make it overflow – covering everything that is around us.

But are we seeking it?  Are we desiring God to fill us?  Or are we content with the physical rest?  The entertainment of our flesh?

St Augustine once said “God is always trying to give good things to us, but our hands are too full to receive them.”

Why do we settle for the cheap laugh?  Or just the adrenaline rush?  Have our lives become so empty?

God has not made us to live that way.  He has created us for much more.  John 10:10 says “I have come that they may have life and that they may have it more abundantly.”

It’s time for us to stop settling.  Often we are like the Israelites, standing at the edge of the Promise Land but never entering.  We deny ourselves all the good things that God has in store for us because we become content with the superficial and trivial and meaningless in life.

God has so much more in store for His children.  1 Corinthians 2:9 says it best:

““Eye has not seen, nor ear heard, nor have entered into the heart of man the things which God has prepared for those who love Him.” (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Rather than an obligation, life is supposed to feel like an adventure. Everyday is another journey with God. Make it your goal to wake up every morning and see what God is going to whisper in your ear today.

I guarantee you, you’ll be glad you did.
